About Us

Lloyd Brothers is a family owned winery and olive grove located in the heart of McLaren Vale. Lloyd Brothers wines and olives are handcrafted to highlight the very best of the fruit grown on our Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale Estates. The 65 hectare McLaren Vale Estate is home to the cellar door, winery and purpose built barrel hall which plays host to impressive festivals, weddings and events.

Our Story

The Lloyd Brothers, David and Matthew are third generation South Australian vignerons. Their grandfather started planting vines and making wine in McLaren Vale in the 1960’s. David and Matthew now have their individual vineyards in the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. David owns and operates Lloyd Brothers Wine and Olive Company with his 65-hectare McLaren Vale Estate being home to the winery and cellar door.  The Lloyd Brothers McLaren Vale Estate comprises 16 hectares Shiraz, 3 hectares Grenache and just under 1 hectare of Mourvèdre and is home to the first commercially planted Kalamata olive grove in South Australia.

Lloyd Brothers wines and olives are hand crafted to highlight the best fruit grown on the Estates with their McLaren Vale property also playing host to impressive festivals and events.

The Vineyards

In 2015 David purchased his Vineyard on The Range in the southern region of the Adelaide Hills overlooking McLaren Vale. Miegunyah is a beautiful 45-hectare property with just over 25 hectares planted to vines. Most recently David has planted 2 hectares of what is believed to be the first Picpoul Blanc planted in the Adelaide Hills along with 1 hectare of Prosecco to complement the well-established Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.

Matthew’s vineyards are located in the Adelaide Hills sub region of Lenswood giving Lloyd Brothers contrasting characteristics when creating and defining the range of cool climate wines they produce.

McLaren Vale Olive Grove

The Lloyd Brothers McLaren Vale estate is home to one of the finest olive groves in the country. Verdale trees were originally planted on the property by an English pioneer in the late 1800's. In the 1960’s much of the old verdale trees were grafted over to Kalamata by a Greek immigrant to create what is believed to be the first commercially planted Kalamata grove in the state. Cuttings of these Verdale and Kalamata trees have been sourced from this historic grove to help establish the South Australia olive industry.

Lloyd Brothers continue to maintain the Grove using traditional techniques and organic farming practices. All the Kalamata fruit is hand-picked and gently sorted, prior to traditional brining. A slow and intensive process using only natural ingredients, making sure the olives retain their structure and that the incredible flavours are enhanced. The Verdale trees are harvested using electric rakes, prior to being cold pressed within 24 hours of picking. This ensures the highest quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil is created, capturing and retaining the flavours and maximizing health benefits of the Olive.

Meet the Team

Sam Temme
General Manager

Sam will be a familiar face to some as he makes his return to Lloyd Brothers. He first worked for David as General Manager from 2006-2010 during which time he helped David and Leanne establish the Lloyd Brothers wine brand. Sam then spent the last decade working for some of the state’s best wineries which involved spending a significant amount of time overseas establishing new markets. During his travels, Sam’s exposure to global brands and wine styles has given him the insight required to take Lloyd Brothers in an exciting new direction. His return in August 2020 has already seen significant changes to Lloyd Brothers, with new branding, fresh new labels and the release of the first Adelaide Hills Picpoul and what is believed to be the first Picpoul Prosecco.

Gonzalo Sanchez
Winemaker

A native Argentinian, Gonzalo has called Australia home for 10 years now. He started his wine making journey in the Grampians, Victoria before establishing his roots here in McLaren Vale. Gonzalo started at Lloyd Brothers as chief winemaker in early 2021, perfectly timed to create the wines from the stunning 2021 vintage. Gonzalo’s passion, integrity and extensive knowledge reflect greatly through his wines as he pushes the boundaries to create new and exciting styles. If you can’t find Gonzalo in the winery, you will probably be able to spot his trademark hair cruising the vineyards in his Army issue Land Rover or manning the coals as he cooks up a traditional Argentinian barbeque to feed the masses.
