2022 Pinot Noir Syrah
Adelaide Hills
Vineyards - The Syrah (30% was selected from block 2 & 3 with the Pinot Noir (70%) being handpicked from block 5A both on the Lloyd Brothers Adelaide Hills vineyard on The Range. (Kuitpo)
Geology of the Lloyd Brothers Adelaide Hills Estate - Located on the Burra Group Geology which is some of the oldest in the region: c. 750 million years. More particularly the Belair Subgroup which is laminated, grey siltstone.
Winemaking - An outstanding vintage in the Adelaide Hills in 2022. A long, slow, cool vintage lead to great flavour development at low baumes whilst retaining great natural acidity. The Pinot Noir was handpicked from the best part of the block. (Cane pruned) One third of the Syrah was handpicked for the whole bunch component with the remaining two thirds being selectively harvested in the cool of night. Each variety and parcel was fermented separately in 1, 2 and 5 tonne open fermenters with varying percentages of whole bunches in each ferment, averaging out around 30% whole bunch ferment. Drained and pressed prior to dryness with ferment finishing in tank or seasoned French oak hogsheads and puncheons depending on the parcel. The wine was aged in seasoned French oak for 6 months. Vegan friendly.
Tasting Note - Light berry red in colour with lifted perfumed aromas of raspberry, strawberry and a touch of spice. Light to medium bodied on the palate with layers of red berries, cherries and a hint of white pepper. A light dry red wine that is best enjoyed young and fresh.
91 points The Vintage Journal - SA Wine Guide - "A 70/30 percentage blend of these two red varieties, the combo with plenty of positive form in Australian wine traditions. Dark cherry fruit, bush florals, perhaps a waft of boronia, juicy and crimson fruited in the medium-weighted palate, peppery spice adding a seasoning in the finish, tannins holding sticky and firm. Worth a shot. 13.5% alc Drink now–2032" Tony Love & Tijana Laganin
91 points The Vintage Journal - SA Wine Guide - "An intriguing blend here, one which was quite popular many decades ago. 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Syrah, wines like this will surely see the blend make a return to fashion. Deep garnet, perfumed by spices, red cherries, cloves, soy, beefstock and dried herbs, along with red fruits, on the nose. Very much a wine in the savoury style. An attractive silky texture, good focus and energy, the wine has a lingering finish and good acidity running the length. Enjoy it now for the next three to four years." Tony Love & Tijana Laganin
